Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam Review
A Top-Tier Stay That Gets Almost Everything Right

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is a hotel that feels important before you even step inside. The property spans six 17th and 18th century canal palaces on the Herengracht, right in Amsterdam's UNESCO-listed canal district. This is not a luxury hotel built to imitate history. It is history.
And look, that is a lot to live up to. Because when a hotel is sitting inside six canal palaces from the 1600s, the bar is set at a very specific height. You are not just paying for a nice room. You are paying for the whole thing.
After my stay, I think it delivers. Mostly.
Arrival and Check-in Experience
I stayed here in early April and booked a King Premier Room. Thanks to our preferred partner perks and my Hilton Gold status, I was upgraded to a King Grand Premier Room with canal views. Status matters at hotels like this, and combined with a preferred partner booking, it can be a very meaningful lever for upgrades and recognition.
We landed at around 2 pm, and I had arranged a transfer directly through the hotel. They picked us up in a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which already set the right tone.
When we arrived, the staff were waiting and immediately took the luggage from the car. From the first second, everything felt smooth and effortless. No awkward transition from airport chaos into hotel mode. Just someone saying "welcome, we have you." That is exactly what you want at this level.
The hotel makes a great first impression, though not in the usual grand-luxury way. There is no massive lobby because you are walking into what feels like a historic house. Since the property sits within Amsterdam's protected canal district, the whole experience is much more intimate and residential than a big palace hotel. That works in its favor. It feels elegant, refined, and well connected to the city around it.

Check-in was smooth, polished, and warm without feeling scripted. Our upgrade was confirmed, and since we were celebrating our anniversary, we were served champagne and given chocolates shaped like canal mansions. Nice touch.
But here is the detail that really got me. At the end of check-in, the staff member opened a cupboard behind her and revealed five different fragrances. She had us smell all of them and invited us to choose one to be sprayed in our room at turndown each night. Welcome drinks are a nice gesture, but they are not different. This was different. Easily one of the most memorable check-in moments I have had at any hotel.
The Room at Waldorf Astoria, Amsterdam
Our King Grand Premier Room with canal views was outstanding by European standards. In Europe, even very expensive hotels often give you smaller rooms than you would expect in Asia or the Middle East. Here, the room felt spacious, well laid out, and very comfortable.
Design-wise, the whole hotel has a strong Bridgerton mood to it all around. The light blue walls genuinely made me feel like I was at Bridgerton’s house, hoping to see Violet Bridgerton around the corner 😂. Everything was very elegant. It never felt theatrical or overdecorated. Classic, sober, and very well judged. Watch the room tour below:

The room had some thoughtful welcome touches waiting for us: Dutch shoe-shaped chocolates, a small cake, and fresh tulips. Very Dutch, and I loved it.
The canal view was lovely, though in our case there were some works happening along the canal, so it was not the prettiest possible version of that view. Still, looking out over the Herengracht is a big part of why you stay here, and it definitely added to the feel of the room. The tall windows were something I had been looking forward to since I started researching the hotel, and they did not disappoint.
Bed and Sleep at Waldorf Astoria, Amsterdam
The bed was excellent. Waldorf Astoria beds have a reputation, and this one earned it. There is also a pillow menu, which I always appreciate. I went straight for feather pillows because I love a soft pillow, but having the choice matters.
Soundproofing was outstanding. The room was incredibly quiet, to the point where it felt like we were alone in the building. In a city hotel inside a historic structure, that is a very big win.
Bathroom at Waldorf Astoria, Amsterdam
Okay, here is where I have to be honest.
Our specific room had an open-concept bathroom. And I just do not think that is a sane idea. I know some luxury hotels love this because it looks modern or dramatic, but a bathroom should feel separate. At least close off the toilet area. Come on. Thanks god not all rooms have this concept.
That said, the fixtures themselves were excellent. The bathtub was beautiful, very classic, almost Belle Époque in feel. The shower was great, and I care a lot about water pressure in hotels. Here it was excellent. That may sound like a small thing, but once you start noticing it across enough hotels, you realize how much it changes how a bathroom feels in real life.
There was also underfloor heating, which was a very nice touch. One minor thing though: only one sink. At this price point, I would have expected two.
Amenities were available on demand with all the usual items covered, and there was a Dyson hair dryer. I even used it myself, which basically never happens.

Dining Experience at Waldorf Astoria, Amsterdam
Breakfast
Breakfast was the standout of the stay.
It was served at Goldfinch Brasserie, on the lower level, and from start to finish it was excellent. Everything was à la carte, no buffet, and all of it was included.
The meal began with the Taste of Waldorf Tower: smoked salmon and cream cheese, toast, butter and jam, and a selection of Dutch cheeses. It was presented beautifully and immediately felt more special than a standard luxury hotel breakfast spread.

Pastries were superb. Really flaky, really fresh. The juice selection was impressive too, around six or seven fresh options. The white grape juice was great, but the peach was my favorite.

For mains, there were options like Eggs Benedict and its variations, avocado toast, shakshuka, mini Dutch pancakes, and French toast. Everything we tried was excellent.

One thing worth knowing: having breakfast included here saves you A LOT. Based on the menu, I calculated that breakfast for two would have cost somewhere between €120 and €150 per day. Getting that for free made a real difference to the overall value of the stay. This is another reason why booking through our travel advisor link matters.
In-room Amenities and Turndown at Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam
The in-room setup was great. Coffee was complimentary, tea came from TWG (also complimentary), and the appliances were by SMEG. The whole refreshment area felt much more premium than the usual Nespresso corner you find at most luxury hotels.
Turndown service was excellent. Every night we found a glass water bottle set beside a covered glass (because at this level, even dust cannot be allowed near your drinking water apparently), slippers laid out on a towel next to the bed, curtains closed, and the room sprayed with the scent we had chosen at check-in. A small box of cinnamon candy on each nightstand, and classical music coming from the TV.
It all felt very complete.
But the best detail came at checkout. They gave us a small box with a wax figure carrying the same scent we had chosen for the room. I had spent a lot of time researching this hotel before arriving, to the point where I basically knew everything that was going to happen. But this one I did not see coming. It was a total surprise, and honestly one of the best farewell moments I have had at any hotel.
Pool, Spa, Gym and Garden at Waldorf Astoria, Amsterdam
The hotel has a 24/7 gym, fully equipped and very good. There is also a Guerlain Spa, and while I did not try the treatments myself, the services on offer looked very impressive. The indoor heated pool was nice, though small. But honestly, who goes to Amsterdam looking for a resort pool?
The garden is protected as part of the property's heritage setting and is said to be the largest private garden in Amsterdam. Pleasant, but it was not one of the highlights for me.
Is the Service at Waldorf Astoria, Amsterdam Good?
Service throughout the stay was excellent. Staff were consistently polite, efficient, and professional. Everything we needed was handled correctly, and there was never any sense of sloppiness or lack of attention.
That said, I would draw a distinction between excellent and deeply personalized. Service here was top-notch, but it did not quite reach the level of hyper-personal, intuitive hospitality you sometimes get at the very best hotels in the world. It was never cold. It just was not the kind of service that makes you feel like the staff have been reading your diary.
During the stay, I also had the chance to meet with the hotel's sales team manager, who took the time to walk me through the property and show me some of the suites and specialty rooms. I love doing this at every hotel we recommend, because personally knowing a property makes it so much easier to match the right clients to the right experience.

Location
The location is close enough to walk to plenty of places, but far enough from the noise and crowds that the hotel still feels calm and protected. That balance is hard to get right in Amsterdam, but Waldorf Astoria does it very well.
Waldorf Astoria, Amsterdam: Final Verdict and Score
I am not going to mess with Dan and Oskar's scoring system, so I will use a simpler one of my own.
Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is a 9 out of 10 for me.
It feels historic in the best possible way: not old or tired, just beautifully preserved and very well run. The room was spacious by European standards, the breakfast was outstanding, the service was excellent, and the arrival and turndown details were some of the best I have experienced anywhere.
The biggest weakness is that at this price level, service could feel a bit more personalized. It was excellent, but not quite unforgettable in that department.
Still, this is undeniably a top-tier hotel, and not one that is trading on reputation alone. It is best for travelers who want everything set up properly, want to feel taken care of, and do not want to think about anything once they arrive.
Would I return? Absolutely.
And if you want to book Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, or any other hotel around the world, with added perks at no extra cost, just send your request. Breakfast, credits, upgrades, flexible rates. All the good stuff, none of the hours spent comparing rates on a lot of different booking sites at midnight.
